About the Amtryke
For years, the AmTryke has benefited and
delighted children with disabilities. Physical therapists
acknowledge the AmTryke’s therapeutic benefits to patients,
citing improved motor skills and strength development. In
fact, the AmTryke was inspired by a therapist. Rotating
handle bars are attached to the same chain drive as the foot
pedals, allowing the rider’s arms to assist the legs in
propelling the bike. Velcro straps secure the feet to the
pedals while torso and hip safety belts maintain the rider
in the seat. A wide wheel base and narrow turning radius
provide stability.
Who does the
Amtryke benefit?
This tricycle will
benefit children with low tone or paralysis of lower
extremities (like Spinabifida) and also children with
Cerebral Palsy who need to build up normal muscle tone and
control. The benefits include increased coordination,
improved muscle Strength, and improved balance. Some
children with mild coordination and balance problems can
benefit from using the AmTryke. They are usually the ones
who cannot ride a bicycle or tricycle. Some children have
progressed from the AmTryke to a regular bicycle with
training wheels. Others have begun to walk with less
assertive devices.
How can my child receive an
Amtryke?
Simply fill out an application and have
your therapist sign it. Once approved, our local chapter
will either present you with an AmTryke within a few weeks
or you will be put on the wish list. Or you can schedule an
evaluation at one of our demo sites by calling us at
937-431-6542.
Cost?
FREE
As funding becomes
available Ohio AMBUCS buys these trykes for children and
gives them away for FREE.
It takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
How can I help?
1. Become a Corporate Sponsor- Donate $500
and Ohio AMBUCS will give away a bike in the name of your
company, and we give you a free Friends Membership.
2. Join Ohio AMBUCS. We are always looking for members,
whether you can attend our meetings or just help out with
our events and fund-raisers. We have 3 levels of membership
starting with a Friends Membership at $25 per year. You
receive our newsletter each month plus the National Ambucs
magazine.
3. Come join us for lunch at Beavercreek Golf Club every 1st
and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 12:00 noon.
